Looking for pasture-raised pork, turkey, or other meats near Des Moines, Iowa? At Hope Rock Farm, we believe healthy soil, healthy animals, and healthy families are connected. That's why we raise our animals on pasture using regenerative farming practices.
Does Pasture-Raised Meat Have Nutritional Benefits?
I'm so excited to tackle another benefit of regenerative farming - the amazing nutrition benefits!
Our motto at Hope Rock Farm is "Good for the land. Great for your plate."
In my last post I shared how regenerative farming is good for the land.
Now we get to talk about the second claim we make - "Great for your plate."
My very first post I shared how we became regenerative farmers. As Frank and I explored the rabbit hole of good eating, we initially asked what was in our food but then began asking how was it raised.
It is simply amazing that when animals are raised the way God intended, they become even more nutritious!
Research suggests animals raised on pasture and allowed to graze naturally often produce meat with a different nutritional profile: higher levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and certain vitamins and antioxidants.
While every farm is different, regenerative farmers focus on creating conditions that allow animals to express their natural behaviors while improving the health of the land.

What Is Rotational Grazing?
Before we dig into the nutrition, we have to back up and revisit the foundation: rotational grazing.
Rotational grazing mimics the way wild herds once moved across the landscape. Imagine the bison roaming the Great Plains (including Iowa!) years ago.
We mimic that pattern here at Hope Rock Farm. Instead of remaining in one area continuously, we regularly move to fresh pasture.
Rotational grazing can:
- Encourage diverse pasture growth
- Improve soil health
- Increase water infiltration
- Distribute nutrients naturally
- Reduce stress on pastures and animals
At Hope Rock Farm, we use regenerative principles that prioritize healthy soil and healthy livestock because the quality of food begins with the quality of the ecosystem producing it.
Health Benefits of Pasture-raised Meats
Now that we've discussed our pasture-raised practices, let's visit the exciting claims science is beginning to make about this method of agriculture.
1. More Beneficial Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in overall health. Studies have found that grass-fed and pasture-raised products often contain higher amounts of omega-3s compared to conventionally raised alternatives.
Omega-3 and omega-6 fats are both important for good health, but most Americans consume far more omega-6 than omega-3. Meat from animals raised on pasture typically contains more omega-3 fats and a more balanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. This more natural fatty acid profile is one of the nutritional benefits many families appreciate about pasture-raised foods.
For families seeking to increase their dietary intake of omega-3s, pasture-raised meats can be a valuable addition to a balanced diet.

2. Higher Levels of CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid)
CLA is a naturally occurring fatty acid found in ruminant animals such as cattle and sheep.
Research has shown that grass-fed and pasture-raised animals may contain significantly higher levels of CLA.
Scientists continue to study CLA which:
- may support healthy metabolism (may help reduce body fat)
- may contribute to normal immune function
- may help sustain lean muscle mass
- may be anti-inflammatory
- may have anti-cancer agents

3. Increased Antioxidants and Vitamins
Studies suggest that pasture-raised and grass-fed meats may contain higher levels of antioxidants and vitamins.
These nutrients include:
- Vitamin E
- Beta Carotene
- Carotenoids
- Phenols
- Terpenoids

Regenerative Farming Matters
We believe animals thrive when they are allowed to live as nature intended and the benefits of regenerative agriculture go beyond nutrition.
When farmers use rotational grazing and pasture-based systems, they are working to:
- Build healthier soil
- Improve water quality
- Increase biodiversity
- Reduce erosion
- Strengthen local food systems
Healthy soil grows healthy plants. Healthy plants support healthy animals. Healthy animals help nourish healthy families.
That's the regenerative cycle we're working to build every day at Hope Rock Farm.
